Build Your Profile, Network & Thought Leadership on LinkedIn
LinkedIn can be a powerful business development tool for attorneys, but most lawyers don’t have hours each week to spend creating content, building an audience or figuring out what the LinkedIn algorithm wants. The good news? You don’t need to.
Our LinkedIn training for lawyers in Northern Virginia is a 1 hour workshop that focuses on practical ways attorneys can use LinkedIn to strengthen their professional reputations, demonstrate expertise, support their firm’s visibility and stay connected with the people who can become clients and referral sources.
The goal isn’t to become a LinkedIn influencer. The goal is to make your expertise more visible to the right people.
Below are some of the strategies we teach during our LinkedIn training for law firms, along with free resources you can use to put them into practice.
Why LinkedIn Training for Lawyers Matters
Before a recent LinkedIn training for a Northern Virginia law firm, we surveyed participating attorneys about how they currently use LinkedIn, how confident they feel using the platform and what they hoped to accomplish.
The results revealed an interesting disconnect.
100% of attorneys who answered the question identified generating new business opportunities as a primary goal for LinkedIn. Yet only 20% said they were currently using LinkedIn for business development or networking.
We also found:
- 80% described themselves as only “somewhat comfortable” using LinkedIn.
- 0% said they regularly share original content.
- 40% said they rarely use LinkedIn.
- 100% wanted to learn how to write posts that get engagement.
- 40% wanted more guidance on what to post and how often.
- 40% wanted to learn more about using LinkedIn for business development.
The small sample of actual Northern Virginia lawyers illustrates a challenge we frequently see with professional services firms: attorneys understand that LinkedIn could contribute to business development, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into knowing what to do when they log in.
The Problem Usually Isn’t “We Need to Post More”
One survey response captured the challenge particularly well. The attorney didn’t want to post routine updates about walking out of court, attending another meeting or completing everyday work. They also didn’t want to spend an hour creating every LinkedIn post.
Their question was essentially: What’s the happy medium? That’s exactly where effective LinkedIn training for lawyers in Washington DC and Northern Virginia with BlueHuki can help.
The goal shouldn’t be to turn every attorney at a firm into a prolific content creator. Instead, training can give attorneys practical ways to:
- Position their profiles around the expertise for which they want to be known
- Recognize useful content ideas within the work they’re already doing
- Turn expertise into short, substantive thought leadership
- Engage with firm content without simply resharing it
- Build and maintain relationships with clients and referral sources
- Use LinkedIn consistently without making it another major time commitment
How to Elevate the Entire Firm with LinkedIn Participation
For law firms, that can also help solve a broader marketing challenge. The firm may be creating excellent content, but its attorneys collectively have professional networks the firm’s company page alone cannot replicate.
When attorneys understand how their individual LinkedIn presence supports both their own business development and the firm’s visibility, LinkedIn becomes more than another social media channel. It becomes an extension of the firm’s relationship-building, reputation and thought-leadership strategy.
Most Popular Topics Requested for a LinkedIn Training for Attorneys
When we work with a law firm on a LinkedIn training for their lawyers in Washington DC or Northern Virginia we typically start with a survey. The survey helps our team understand more about how their attorneys are using LinkedIn today and what topics they find most useful.
This is an example of the survey results for a local Northern Virginia law firm on the topics they wanted to cover in the training.

Getting Started: Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile as a Lawyer
Before worrying about what to post, start with your profile. Your LinkedIn profile may be one of the first places a prospective client, referral source or professional contact goes after hearing your name.
A strong attorney profile should quickly communicate what you do, who you help and what you’re known for. Full guide here, but our shorter take is below!
Start with five areas:
Photo: Is it professional, current and recognizable?
Headline: Does it communicate your expertise rather than simply saying “Partner at XYZ Law Firm”?
About: Does it explain who you help and what you know?
Experience: Does your current position describe your actual practice areas and expertise?
Proof: Are you showcasing articles, speaking engagements, guides or other content that demonstrates your knowledge?
Here’s our favorite test:
If someone who had never met you looked at your profile for 30 seconds, would they know what to hire or refer you for?
Great example profile: Brian Heller – he’s the “Contracts Guy” and garners 30-60,000 views a month of his LinkedIn profile. He does it while running a successful law practice.

LinkedIn Thought Leadership for Lawyers Doesn’t Mean Posting Constantly
One of the biggest objections we hear during LinkedIn training for attorneys is completely reasonable:
“I don’t have time to post all day – and I don’t want to post meaningless updates just to get engagement.”
You shouldn’t.
For lawyers, strong LinkedIn content isn’t about documenting everything you do. It’s about extracting useful insights from the expertise you already have.
Instead of posting:
“We obtained a default judgment for a client today.”
Think about the useful knowledge behind that experience:
“Winning a judgment and collecting on one can be two very different things. Business owners are often surprised by what happens after a judgment is entered…”
Same professional experience. Much more useful content.
What Should Lawyers Post on LinkedIn?
Attorneys already encounter potential LinkedIn content every day. The trick is learning to recognize it.
Consider:
- Common questions: What do clients repeatedly ask you?
- Legal developments: What changed, and who needs to know about it?
- Misconceptions: What do clients commonly misunderstand about your practice area?
- Professional observations: What have you learned that could help someone else?
- Firm and personal content: Can you add your perspective to firm news, an article, event or professional milestone?
You don’t need to turn every idea into a post.
For many busy attorneys, one genuinely useful original post every two to four weeks is a much more sustainable place to start.
How to Write a LinkedIn Post People Actually Read
When you have an idea but aren’t sure how to turn it into a post, try this simple framework:
Hook → Insight → Why It Matters → Takeaway
HOOK: Give someone a reason to stop scrolling.
INSIGHT: Tell them something useful or unexpected.
WHY IT MATTERS: Explain who the issue affects and why they should care.
TAKEAWAY: Leave the reader knowing something they didn’t know before.
The takeaway doesn’t always need to be “contact me.” For lawyers, demonstrating expertise can be the call to action. Someone may read your content today and refer a client to you six months from now because they remember you as the attorney who understands that issue.

You Don’t Have to Post to Build Your Professional Brand
This is one of the most important things we teach in our LinkedIn training for Washington DC and Northern Virginia lawyers: Creating original content is only one way to become more visible.
Thoughtful commenting can also demonstrate expertise.
Instead of:
“Great article!”
Add something meaningful:
“The point about early documentation is especially important. By the time a dispute reaches counsel, communications from the first few weeks can become some of the most valuable evidence.”
Now you’re contributing something useful while putting your expertise in front of the original author’s network.
This is also an easy way for attorneys to support their law firm’s LinkedIn strategy. Engage with firm content when it’s relevant, and when you have something meaningful to add, share your perspective instead of simply clicking Like or Share.
Use LinkedIn for Lawyer Business Development
LinkedIn business development doesn’t have to mean sending cold sales messages to strangers. For many lawyers, one of its greatest benefits is helping turn real-world connections into long-term professional relationships.
After meeting someone at a Northern Virginia business event, bar association program, conference, client meeting or professional introduction, connect with them.
Then:
Meet → Connect → Stay Visible → Engage → Demonstrate Expertise → Be Remembered
A contact may not need your services today, but months later, when someone asks, “Do you know a lawyer who handles this?”, LinkedIn can help make sure you’re still someone they remember.
